A tonne (t) or metric ton (M/T), also referred to as a metric tonne, is a measurement of mass equal to 1000 kilograms. 1 tonne = 1.102 U.S. tons, or 2204 pounds.

The concept is to offset or negate the same amount of carbon you release into the atmosphere. The offset is created by either supporting a renewable energy source, or by funding activities that lower the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric CO2. The idea is to stabilize carbon in solid and dissolved forms so that it doesn’t cause the atmosphere to warm. Carbon sequestration is one method of reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, which helps to reduce global climate change.
